The British Olympic Association (BOA) has officially endorsed Glasgow’s bid for the 2018 Youth Olympics with the project set to focus on the substantial legacy offerings of the Scottish city’s staging of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and London’s 2012 Olympics.

After announcing Glasgow as its candidate city, the BOA will now formally submit its intention to bid to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by March 1. The BOA has stated that the 2014 Commonwealth Games will provide Glasgow with much of the necessary sporting, accommodation and transport infrastructure, as well as the recent experience of delivering a high-profile, international and multi-sport Games. It added that the Youth Olympics provides a “great opportunity to further extend the youth, sporting and educational legacy of the London 2012 Games”.

The bid will be underwritten by the City of Glasgow Council and Scottish Government. BOA chairman Colin Moynihan said: “The Youth Olympic Games have quickly established themselves as an important and inspirational event in the international sporting calendar. We know the bidding process will be highly competitive, but we are confident that in Glasgow we have an outstanding candidate city.”

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, added: “Glasgow is one of the world’s great sporting cities which will play host to Olympic events in the summer of 2012, the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and the World Artistic Gymnastics in 2015 alongside our annual programme of top international meetings in sports such as athletics and gymnastics. The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will soon show a global audience what we can do in terms of hosting one of the world’s biggest celebrations of sport, and winning the right to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games would be another outstanding achievement for the city.”

The IOC will produce a shortlist of candidate cities in January 2013, before announcing the winning host city in the summer of 2013. Buenos Aires in Argentina, Medellín in Colombia and Guadalajara in Mexico have all announced their intention to bid for the 2018 Games.

Question by steven9892ataol: How long before the MLS can be considered even with Premier league? How long do you think it will take the MLS to be at the same level of the premier leagues...

Question by steven9892ataol: How long before the MLS can be considered even with Premier league?
How long do you think it will take the MLS to be at the same level of the premier leagues (Spain, England, etc).

Eventually the US will produce (already have a few) top rated players that can excel in the premireship. I would assume that since they are from this country they would make there money in Europe and come back to the US. Eventually they will come back in their prime to contribute.

I think this will attract more overseas players. MLS is not far off from being considered a top level league. I do not think anyone can dispute the fact that they are close to it now.

Premiership teams would not travel to this country during there preseason to play subpar opponents. They can get that from there own sub leagues.

MLS is on the rise and I love it. 10 years ago I was embarrased by the level of play. Now I tune it all the time.
I appreciate all the view points. As both leagues differ dramatically they both offer different styles. I truly believe that the premiership is a top heavy league; Spain, Italy, and england. Take Dallas, DC or New England and they would finish bottom of the pack, not relegated. The top teams are actually destroying the competition. Soon these leagues will have to adopt a salary cap, the money does not grow on trees.

With that being said, the leagues will eventually become even. Whether that is 10 or 20 years.

Thank you all for your responses. But we will never know until there is a world wide tournament. World cup does not count because a premier league team is always going to be better.

Best answer:

Answer by David D
MLS will unfortunately not ever be even with the Premier Leagues. I would love for that to happen, as a soccer fan. However, Americans do not care. They are a bandwagon country, and only pay attention when they are playing in the World Cup, or another big tournament, and as soon as they lose, they turn off their sets.

The long-running legal dispute between England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Giles Clarke and IMG has been settled out of court, but former Indian Premier League (IPL) chief Lalit Modi has expressed his intention...

The long-running legal dispute between England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Giles Clarke and IMG has been settled out of court, but former Indian Premier League (IPL) chief Lalit Modi has expressed his intention to maintain his action against Clarke.

The dispute erupted when Clarke alleged in an email to an official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that undercover plans were being forged to establish a rebel Twenty20 league in England. Clarke was angered when several English first-class counties met with representatives from the IMG agency and Modi in Mumbai to discuss new approaches to marketing the Twenty20 format of the sport in England.

The talks were interpreted by Clarke as being potentially disruptive to world cricket’s administration and outside their jurisdiction. The ECB chairman’s letter was widely reported in the media and led to both IMG and Modi commencing libel proceedings. However, an ECB statement on Wednesday read: “In May 2010 Giles Clarke CBE, chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, sent an email to the president of the Board of Control for Cricket In India, the contents of which were subsequently widely reported in the British and international media which resulted in libel proceedings being issued by IMG.

“This statement confirms that Mr Clarke accepts that IMG did not act in breach of ICC rules and intended to act within the official structures of world cricket. IMG accepts that Giles Clarke was not intending deliberately to damage its reputation. On that basis the parties have agreed to settle the litigation on confidential terms.”

Modi has used the platform of his own website to declare that while Clarke and IMG have seemingly settled their differences, he still intends to meet the ECB chairman at the High Court in June. Modi said: “IMG and I simultaneously sued for libel after Mr Clarke sent an e-mail to the BCCI claiming that a meeting involving me, IMG and English county representatives, had been arranged to privately discuss a new T20 tournament in England and was therefore against ICC rules.”

He added: “So I was interested to see today the ECB’s statement confirming settlement with IMG. The statement confirmed that Mr Clarke had accepted that IMG had done nothing wrong. The statement said: ‘This statement confirms that Mr Clarke accepts that IMG did not act in breach of ICC rules and intended to act within the official structures of world cricket.’ My involvement in the same meeting has yet to induce any such acceptance from Mr Clarke and so consequently, my action remains in place.”

The PGA Tour has strengthened its commercial portfolio by striking a new five-year agreement with FedEx that will extend the shipping company’s umbrella sponsorship of the golf organisation’s showpiece playoff system, the FedExCup.

The FedExCup, which fundamentally changed the PGA Tour structure by introducing a season-long competitive and promotional platform in 2007, will continue to offer US$ 35 million in total bonus money to players based on their finish in the points standings, including $ 10 million to the winner. Beginning in 2013, the four-tournament PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup will be officially called the FedExCup Playoffs. The new agreement runs through to 2017.

“Since its inception in 2007, the FedExCup has transformed the competitive landscape on the PGA Tour and significantly benefited all of our stakeholders,” said PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem. “It makes every FedExCup event more meaningful, adding substantial value to our tournaments, title sponsors and television partners. Most importantly, the FedExCup offers our fans more ways to engage in our sport and get excited about our players week in and week out.”

The shipping giant has built advertising and promotional campaigns around its sponsorship of the FedExCup as well as creative activation surrounding the Playoffs. As part of the extension, FedEx will continue to advertise in PGA Tour broadcasts and other media outlets and become further integrated into the PGA Tour’s digital and global operations. FedEx also plans to continue its business-building initiatives at tournaments in key markets.

“The FedExCup has been a very effective way for FedEx to engage in the community and reach our customers over the last five years,” said T. Michael Glenn, executive vice-president of market development at FedEx. “One of the most significant dividends of our FedExCup commitment has been that it allows us to support national and local charities, such as the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital through the FedEx St. Jude Classic, in a very hands-on manner.”

Updated Feb 23, 2012 3:36 AM ET

One day before the start of the Dallas Mavericks’ five-day All-Star Weekend break, Lamar Odom bailed on a chance to play against the Los Angeles Lakers on national television.

Family Matters. Not Steve Urkel. Not Carl and Hariette Winslow.

Nope. We’re talking family matters, which in all likelihood means Lamar was in Los Angeles while the Lakers and Mavericks battled in Dallas because of something to do with Khloe Kardashian, Lamar’s reality-star wife.

Bart Scott voice: Can’t wait!

Can’t wait to hear the Mavericks and Odom fully explain what was so urgent in Los Angeles that Odom couldn’t wait 12 to 24 hours before starting his All-Star vacation. Professional athletes, like a lot of responsible people, work through and around many family emergencies. Short of death and the birth of a child, most professionals show up at work and do their jobs to the best of their abilities, even in times of personal crisis.

I hope that Odom has a good reason for skipping Wednesday’s contest, a five-point Lakers victory. I hope Odom didn’t skip the game for the same reason he’s mentally and emotionally skipped most of this season — a broken heart.

Odom has been whining and loafing ever since the Lakers purged his contract by giving him to the defending champion Mavericks. Odom just can’t muster the courage and energy to suffer through an NBA season playing away from the Kardashians, his reality TV set and Kobe Bryant.

A season after winning the NBA’s sixth-man award, Mr. Kardashian’s scoring and rebounding numbers have fallen in half. He’s averaging 7.7 points and 4.5 rebounds for the Mavericks. Instead of seizing an opportunity to be the key ingredient in Dallas’ bid to defend its title, Odom has chosen to sulk and brood and hide.

He wants to move back to LA, and he apparently is willing to withhold his services in an effort to make it happen.

The Lakers dumped him, and, citing family matters, Lamar declined the chance to exact revenge in a nationally televised game.

Are you kidding me? Did Jordan skip games against the Bulls? Did Favre pass up a chance to play the Packers? OK, Lamar Odom is not Jordan or Favre. Kyle Orton took his shot against the Broncos and Tim Tebow. I bet Jeremy Lin will relish his chance to play against his hometown Golden State Warriors.

Family matters. You have to grow a pair to start a family, Lamar.

The same is true for Pau Gasol. For a 31-year-old, 11-year veteran, he’s doing way too much whining about being on the trading block.

It’s just not that difficult. Let me share a secret with Pau and Lamar. Most people work some place where they’re not appreciated, not valued and, perhaps, not even wanted. Real men (and women) make do. It’s like a marriage. You fake it for the sake of the kids.

You think Kobe’s not faking it with all this mumbo jumbo about wanting Pau to stay and being upset Lamar was let go?

In Kobe’s mind, everyone on the roster except Andrew Bynum is expendable, and Bynum is expendable if Dwight Howard is available.

Kobe is frustrated because general manager Mitch Kupchak is taking too long to surround him with the right pieces to make a run at title No. 6. Kobe wants a real point guard far more than he wants Pau Gasol to stick on the roster. Kobe was done with Derek Fisher the moment the ink was dry on the horrendous collective-bargaining agreement.

Kobe is an assassin. He discarded Shaquille O’Neal, one of the 20 greatest players of all time. And you think Kobe gives a damn about Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, two of the most mentally soft players in the league right now?

Have you forgotten it was just last year that Gasol went into a funk over rumors about his girlfriend and Shannon Brown? Kobe hasn’t forgotten. Kobe is leading the league in scoring while going through a divorce.

Yeah, I don’t blame Lamar for missing Kobe. And I don’t blame Pau for being scared to death of leaving Kobe’s protective cocoon. Lamar and Pau don’t have Kobe’s lower guts. They’re sidekicks who enjoy gravy-training off Kobe on the court and living the Hollywood life off it.

Family matters. Kobe’s in the market for a new one on and off the court.

It was a night of late strikes in the Uefa Champions League with big guns Bayern Munich and Inter Milan both face deficits after their first legs.

*FC Basel 1 (Stocker 86’) def Bayern Munich 0

The German giants threw plenty at the Swiss champions with Franck Ribery going closest but Yannick Sommer was in an inspired mood at Basel celebrated another famous night at St. Jakob-Park. Basel did have their chances, with Alexander Frei and Marco Streller causing problems throughout, but it was two substitutes who combined for the late winner, when Jacques Zoua strode forward before finding Valentin Stocker unmarked and he slotted home.

Basel boss Heiko Vogel said: “Now we are in a great position ahead of the second leg. My team have unbelievable willpower, a good sense of who they are and a healthy self-confidence.”

Vogel added: “Every day we enjoy the work we do and that will pay off at some point. This victory is one thing; the overall result another. But we are capable of scoring away goals and if we do that in Munich it will be very difficult for Bayern.”

Bayern trainer Jupp Heynckes said: “It’s an uncomfortable situation, but I have been in these situations before in my coaching career. It was a balanced match with good chances for either side. We lost 1-0 and now we’re not in an ideal position ahead of the second leg.”

Heynckes added: “We are making a lot of mistakes. The alarm bells are ringing, though we have a second leg and can still correct this result. It is certainly possible to beat Basel 2-0 at home.”

Olympique Marseille 1 (Ayew 90’) def Inter Milan 0

The French side take a slender advantage into the second leg after a hard-fought win over Inter. The match was a tight contest with both sides having opportunities, however Marseille, who were postive throughout the match, ramped up the pressure late and eventually it told when Andre Ayew headed home from a corner.

OM boss Didier Deschamps said: “We stuck to our tactics. There is always a risk with pushing on that you can be punished in the end, but scoring in the final minute didn’t give them time to come back. Now we must be ambitious and must go there with the intention to get through, though Inter remain a great team.”

Inter manager Claudio Ranieri said: “We have lacked some luck in the last few weeks. Tonight we conceded when the match was over and until then we controlled Marseille. In any case, we showed that we are still a lively team and we can overturn this result with the help of our full stadium.”

DALLAS — Andrew Bynum had a huge smile on his face after he grabbed a rebound of his own miss and got fouled on an attempted putback.

Not long after making both those free throws that put the Los Angeles Lakers ahead to stay, Bynum was running after teammate Derek Fisher to give him a big hug following a 3-pointer.

Bynum had 19 points and 14 rebounds, including several big plays in the final 5 1/2 minutes, as the Lakers hit the halfway point of their season with a 96-91 victory over the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.

“Andrew was great,” coach Mike Brown said.

The free throws by Bynum broke an 82-all tie with 5:29 left, and put the Lakers (20-13) ahead to stay after 13 ties and 10 lead changes.

After the Mavericks failed to take advantage of a turnover by Kobe Bryant when Jason Terry gave it right back, Bynum was underneath the basket with the ball. But he instead passed it to Fisher in the left corner for a 3-pointer. Bynum was smiling broadly as he chased down and hugged Fisher when Dallas called timeout.

Fisher, whose driving short jumper with 3:41 left ended a 9-0 run and made it 89-82, had given Bynum a pep talk before the game. They also were thinking about the playoffs against Dallas last season.

“We got swept last year, and it was on our minds,” Bynum said.

There was also Bynum’s alley-oop dunk from Bryant with 1:05 left that stretched the lead to 93-86. The Lakers then held on despite missing six consecutive free throws after that.

Bryant missed two free throws with 37 seconds left. After Dirk Nowitzki’s tip-in got Dallas within 93-91, Pau Gasol was fouled and missed both of his free throws with 20 seconds left.

“I’m a little overweight; I’m too young to have a heart attack,” Brown said after watching all those misses.

But Matt Barnes grabbed the rebound after Gasol’s second miss and was quickly fouled himself. He ended the Lakers’ charity-line slump with two free throws.

“That was big,” Fisher said. “The way last season ended, this game was big for a lot of us.”

Gasol had 24 points for the Lakers, while Bryant and Fisher each had 15. Bryant shot 4-of-15 while being held to 14 fewer than his NBA-leading scoring average and was scoreless until two free throws with 10 seconds left in the first quarter.

Nowitzki had 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Mavericks (21-13), who played their final game before the All-Star break after winning seven of their previous eight games. Vince Carter had 20.

“I’m [disappointed] tonight, I’m not dismayed,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “Our effort was there, we just didn’t make enough plays at both ends. … The break’s coming at a good time.”

The Lakers have one more game before the All-Star break. They play Thursday night at Oklahoma City.

Lamar Odom missed the game for the Mavericks against his former team. Odom was the NBA’s sixth man of the year for the Lakers last season and won three NBA championship rings in seven years in Los Angeles.

Carlisle said Odom was excused from the game to attend to a family matter and will rejoin the team after the All-Star break.

The Lakers had their biggest lead when Steve Blake had a steal and passed ahead to Gasol for a running one-handed slam that made it 42-28 with 6:21 left in the first half. That ended 12 consecutive points and a 17-2 Los Angeles run.

“I was aggressive in the beginning. I was able to knock down some shots and make plays,” Gasol said. “[This win] shows we’re on the same page and we’ve got a lot of character.”

But the Mavericks finished the half with a 20-6 run over the final 5:33 to tie the game at 48-all by the break.

Nowitzki scored the last six Dallas points, two free throws with 1:23 left and then a pair of jumpers in the final 42 seconds. He made a 15-foot floater, and after grabbing a long rebound of a miss by Gasol, Nowitzki made a tying jumper.

“It just seemed like we’d get a little momentum and then we had trouble sustaining,” Carlisle said. “Tough game, but you’ve got to give them credit.”

Game notes
All the Mavericks except Nowitzki, who will make his 11th consecutive All-Star appearance, have the next four days off. They play nine games in 12 days, starting with Tuesday’s home game against New Jersey. … Texas Rangers designated hitter/first baseman Michael Young was shown on the overhead video board before the start of the fourth quarter. Young is a big Lakers fan. Rangers position players don’t have to report to training camp in Arizona until Saturday. … The Lakers jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the first 4 minutes, and Carlisle used two timeouts in that span.

Question by Jenifer S: soccer !!!?
i have been playing soccer fo a while now and i want to practice besides with the team i was wondering wht kinda drills i should to improve my touches and kicks. Also i want to improve my left foot. Go any tips. thanx

Best answer:

Answer by colourzebra
I m also soccer player. If U wanna learn dribbling the best way is to watch Christiano Ronaldo or other play makers. He is my favourite. My best dribble is First crossing my right foot over the ball without touching the ball and then same with left foot and again with right foot now move the ball the side U want. This is the best dribble in 1 on 1 tackle. Or If U wanna improve ur left leg just practice 1 hr everyday with left foot without even touching the ball with right leg. I had the same problem. Now I have improved so much that in last match I played, I scored the opening goal by my left foot. It was a great pass and I just finished off with just a fast flick. We won that match with 3-0. By the way I m 15 and without a gf. Check my profile. Pls Pls dont chat with me if U have the habbit of saying dirty.
